BACKGROUND: The year 2012 marks the 25th Anniversary of the Avo cigar brand created by cigar icon Avo Uvezian, who began composing cigars in 1987. To celebrate the 25 years in the business, Avo has decided to share with the consumer public his two greatest passions, the piano and the cigar. It is this passion for music and cigars that has presented Avo with such happiness throughout the last quarter century.
The cigars come packed in a stunning black lacquered, wooden ‘piano’ box, containing a short-term humidification system and a small compartment for accessory storage.
The cigar starts with a beefy filler blend that includes, Piloto Cubano and San Vicente Ligero, and Piloto Cubano and Olor Viso, all grown in the Dominican Republic. This mix is wrapped in a Piloto Cubano binder and the cigar is crowned with a silky Criollo, Sun-Grown wrapper, also grown in the Dominican Republic. Consisting entirely of Dominican tobaccos, this cigar is a true Dominican “Puro.”
According to Avo Brand Manager, Scott Kolesaire, “The packaging for this masterpiece is one of a kind.” He goes on to say that, “…the 25th Anniversary Edition cigar is a magnificent blend that perfectly captures the passion, quality and expertise that has gone into every Avo cigar over the past 25 years.”
The Avo 25th Anniversary Edition is produced in extremely limited quantities, only 2,000 individually numbered boxes containing 25 cigars are available in the United States. The suggested retail price is set at $16.00 per cigar or $400.00 per box. This week’s featured cigar is the 6-inch by 52 ring gauge Avo 25th Anniversary Toro.
TASTING NOTES: This Avo 25th is a sensory dance of flavors. I get wood, smoke, coffee, vanilla bean, baker’s cocoa and the list goes on…
When you sit and contemplate the flavors, nothing really hits you as a predominant flavor because the flavors are a moving target. That is the essence of complexity.
The cigar is medium-full from the outset and may not appeal to new smokers. Nevertheless, those with experienced palates will likely find a soul mate in the 25th anniversary. Big body and flavor will definitely provide a rush and I think that most people will find this to be an interesting and challenging smoke.
FINAL THOUGHTS: In a day when cigars are being routinely packed in boxes or bundles of 10, 12, 18, or 20 cigars, I am sure glad that this box of Avo 25th anniversary cigars has a full 25 sticks. I can see myself going through these pretty quickly, but I’d love to keep some around for the long term.
The Avo 25th is an excellent smoke. It is medium-full in body, flavor and strength and yet also generates a complex flavor profile. The construction and burn are typical Davidoff: rock solid. The only thing that might hold people back is the price. At a suggested retail price of $16 per stick, this is going to be too steep for some pocketbooks. On the other hand, you may want to consider a purchase as a special occasion cigar. That’s how I justified my own purchase… I intend to smoke these on special occasions, like Tuesday, or Wednesday, Thursday... all right, perhaps Friday, Saturday….
I have left these cigars in their beautiful custom cigar box, which has a small humidifier so it can be proudly displayed. This is one of the most unique cigar boxes you will find and it is wonderfully crafted. This is the first of two podcast reviews on these cigars, which have been resting in my humidor for 1 month prior to this review.
