Mutante (Lancero), 7 x 38
Wrapper: Ecuadorian Habano
|Cigar age||0 yr. 7.7 mo.|
BACKGROUND: Room 101, the Los Angeles based luxury lifestyle brand owned by Matt Booth delivered the final chapter of its super-premium Master Collection Series, the Master Collection Three. The first edition, Room101 Master Collection One, debuted in late 2013, followed quickly by the Master Collection Two. The newest, Master Collection Three began shipping nationwide in February 2015.
The blend is comprised of tobaccos from three different countries; a Habano wrapper from Ecuador, a binder from the Dominican Republic and filler tobaccos from two growing regions in Nicaragua. As with all Master Collection blends, the experience is designed for those with a more refined palate.
The new Master Collection Three is packaged in white, piano finish boxes and contain either 20 or 50 cigars depending on the format. This edition is available in five formats and retails from $8.00 to $12.00 per cigar.
TASTING NOTES: This Lancero started out light and bright with white pepper spice on the palate. Retrohaling added more white pepper and even some chili pepper to the equation. All in all the Master Collection Three Mutante was light in strength, but medium in body and flavor during the first half.
After the first couple of inches, the cigar displayed a bit of wild oats and a touch of vanilla sweetness. The construction on this stick was impeccable. The smooth draw allowed plenty of smoked through the barrel, which made for plenty of retrohale fodder. The ash was firm and consistent, and the burn line was dead even. This package made for a fine smoking experience during the first half.
FINAL THOUGHTS: In the second half, the cigar elevated in strength to about medium and the flavor and body remained the same: medium. This cigar is definitely lighter than the first two iterations of the Masters Collection. But what it lacked in body and strength, it made up for with complexity and nuance.
I would pair the Master Collection Three Lancero with any single malt scotch (be sure to cut it with water or ice). I would also pair it with a blended scotch, neat. The Mutante might also pair well with an aged sipping rum. There are a few cocktails that might also work well with the cigar. Give some a try and let me know what you think.
Final verdict: Buy a few of these and enjoy. And, be sure to hold some back for future aging.
These cigars are kept in their original box inside my converted wine cooler cabinet humidor. The Oasis active humidifier is set at 68%RH and the temperatures are in the low to upper 60's°F, depending on the season.
This is the first of two reviews on these cigars, which have been resting for 7 months and 18 days in my humidor.
