BACKGROUND: I first reviewed the Respect, Hooah Robusto from AKA Cigars on Saturday, October 6, 2012. These cigars have been resting for a total of 1 year, 3 months and 7 days prior to this second and final review.
AKA Cigars is a boutique cigar company that wanted to show their patriotism by having an American-themed company. And so was born the American Kick Ass (AKA) Cigar Company.
Their cigars are named to pay tribute to the Armed Forces. Today I'm reviewing the RESPECT line, which is a tribute to all branches of the United States Military. The AKA Respect line consists of a dark Ecuadorian Habano wrapper that has been aged 4 years. The binder is also aged 4-years and is a Honduran Corojo Ligero. The filler blend consists of 4- and 5-year-aged Dominican Corojo ligero and Honduran Corojo ligero. The cigar I'm reviewing today is the 5.5 inch by 50 ring gauge Army “Hooah” Robusto.
TASTING NOTES: This cigar came out of the gate with dark cocoa notes and dark roasted coffee. Retrohaling added a good dose of black pepper spice. A year ago, this stick displayed a bitter bite on the finish, but with an extra year of aging that has mellowed nicely. Even so, this cigar is still packing plenty of punch and is still a cigar for more experienced cigar smokers.
The draw and burn were excellent this time around. The smooth draw channeled copious amounts of smoke, which was thick and heavy in the air. The burn line was even and the ash was deeply striated and yet held firm.
This is not a complex cigar, it's pretty much straightforward in its flavor profile, but it has plenty of flavor and horsepower. I would rate this cigar as medium-full in body and strength and full in flavor.
FINAL THOUGHTS: During the second half the Respect, Hooah Robusto kept the same basic flavor and body profile. The cigar was earthy and savory and bursting with oak wood, cocoa and coffee flavors.
I can recommend this cigar to those who like an in-your-face smoke with big flavor and body. This is also a cigar that should age well over the first few years, so don’t be afraid to archive a few for future enjoyment. I would also recommend pairing this with a full-bodied craft beer or aged bourbon.
Final verdict: If you like your cigars earthy with big flavor, then buy, try and enjoy the Respect Hooah.
These cigars are resting in my Vanderburgh custom-built desktop humidor. The extra thick solid exotic hardwood walls and the solid granite bottom keep the internal environment very stable at around 65-68%RH. The humidor is humidified with a Xikar superabsorbent polymer cassette.
These cigars have been resting for 1 year, 3 months and 7 days prior to this review. This is the second and final review of these sticks.
