BACKGROUND: Alpha Cigar Company was founded in Hong Kong and has been a purveyor of fine cigars in the Asia Pacific region since 2012. Created in dedication to the lifestyle of premium cigar smoking, Alpha constantly strives to give its customers premium quality, construction, and consistency.
Alpha Cigar Company uses traditionally made absinthe to infuse its cigars. The tobacco leaves are delicately infused in a specially designed misting room using premium absinthe from a centuries-old distillery in Pontarlier, France. French-style absinthes use the “holy trinity” of herbs that form the flavor profile that artists such as Hemingway and Picasso enjoyed: Wormwood, Anise, and Fennel. Secondary flavor profiles from the natural plant oils suspended in the absinthe may also produce pine/evergreen, floral, mint, and even citrus tastes.
TASTING NOTES: There's always one fear that I have about smoking infused cigars: That they will be overly sweet, syrupy, or both. My first impression of the Alpha Absinthe Infused cigar was that it wasn't an infused cigar. It presented very much like other Connecticut-wrapped Dominican blends: spicy and grassy with a subtle natural tobacco sweetness provided by the Ecuadorian Connecticut leaf. I'll be honest; I'm not a big fan of absinthe and, if this cigar tasted overtly like absinthe, I probably wouldn't have liked it. That said, most well-made absinthes have an herbal complexity that makes them taste like more than just licorice candy. The Alpha Absinthe Infused definitely showed some herbal qualities as well as just a suggestion of licorice. Retrohaling provided a snoutful of white pepper spice that lit up my nasal mucosa with a rich, spicy sensation.
The construction and burn were both excellent. The draw was smooth with just the right amount of resistance and the coal-gray ash was firm and held tightly to the foot of the cigar. The burn line was thin and even. I couldn't have asked for more in the performance aspect.
FINAL THOUGHTS: The Alpha Absinthe Infused cigar is a delight to smoke. If you like Connecticut wrappers, this one is excellent. The flavors are consistent with other classic Connecticut cigars and the addition of herbal and spicy notes makes this cigar a well-rounded smoke.
This cigar is easily approachable and, as such, should be an easy recommendation to almost any cigar smoker. It is certainly worth a try and if you are put-off by the "infused" designation, don't be. Give this one a dance and be ready to be impressed.
I would recommend these alongside white wine, blended whiskey, or pilsners. Also, if you are a fan of absinthe, be sure to have this cigar with it. It will no doubt match up well with the herbal and licorice notes.
Final verdict: Buy one or more and enjoy at pretty much any time of day.
These cigars reside inside my Daniel Marshall 165-count desktop humidor. Each has a cellophane wrapper, which I have left intact and I have placed all of the samples inside a secondary plastic cigar sack with the opening left unsealed. (This is not to keep these infused cigars from tainting the rest of the humidor, but merely to keep the singles together, which sometimes get lost in a large desktop humi.)
This is the first review of these sticks, which have been resting a total of 3 months and 5 days in my humidor.
