Famed jazz pianist and cigar enthusiast Avo Uvezian is turning 83 and Davidoff will be celebrating his birthday with the new Avo Compañero cigar, the limited-edition release for 2009. “The Avo Compañero is the best blend ever released under my name from the Occidental Kelner Cigars factory in the Dominican Republic,” said Uvezian.

Fans of the Avo brand are invited to celebrate with him and try the new cigar before everyone else, as Uvezian will be going on tour to host a series of pre-release cigar dinners around the country. The tour will kick off on March 16 at Davidoff of Geneva on Madison Avenue, in New York City.

The new Avo Limited Edition Campañero for 2009 consists of a Cuban seed, sun-grown Ecuadorian wrapper and Dominican San Vicente binder. The filler is a blend of criollo, piloto Cubano and San Vicente tobacco (all of it ligero) in addition to Peruvian seco.

Compañero" – the name chosen by Avo Uvezian for his new limited edition, available in selected tobacconists from May onwards. And it lives up to its name: the imposing Toro format not only accompanies passionate cigar lovers as a faithful companion through pleasurable hours in good company. At valuable moments of peace and seclusion, the AVO "Compañero" also celebrates the bond between body and mind. As with all AVO cigars, this is ensured not least by the multi-faceted, aromatic and somewhat stronger taste attributable to its Ligero component that guarantees a relaxing smoking experience – entirely in keeping with Avo’s maxim "cigars in perfect harmony.

Avo Compañeros, which measure 6 inches long by 54 ring, will have a suggested retail price of $16 per cigar or $160 per box of 10. Only 8,000 boxes were produced.

This cigar comes blazing out of the chute. This cigar hits you will full body, full flavor and a retrohale that will plunge the depths of your nasal mucosa. I kid you not, this is a powerhouse cigar. For those of you that like cigars big and bold, this is certainly a chapter in that book. But because of its horsepower, it lacks the subtlety and complexity that I like to see in my favorite cigars. This cigar is more aikin to a La Flor Dominicana Double Ligero. Big and bold, and what it lacks in finesse, it makes up for with a powerful kick in the seat of the pants. Lots of people like their cigars this way. So for those of you who do, look no further for a possible rival to the heavyweight champ.

I believe this is a heaver cigar than the Avo 80th anniversary smoke. That one was a heavyweight, but this one has more punch. Neither of these smokes is very complex. They both present with a straightforward fullness in body and flavor. The Compañero has a tangy spice, which I think is its best feature. That spice hits you not only on the palate but also in the retrohale. I had no trouble staying awake in the first half of this smoke.

The Avo 2009 limited edition cigar, the Compañero, is a full-bodied and full flavored warrior. Subtlety is not one of its strong points. As with most cigars made by Davidoff, this cigar is well constructed. And that means it burns and draws with near perfection. For those of you who enjoy a full flavored, full bodied spicy powerhouse, this is your cigar. At $16 per stick, I won't be lining up to buy multiple boxes of this stick, however I do recommend it, at least for a special occasion smoke.

These cigars have been stored in their original box, with cellophane sleeves within my Aristocrat Cabinet. The relative humidity remain between 68-70% and the temperature varies between 65-70 degrees F.

This Limited Edition cigar has been resting for 1.5 months. This is the first in a series of two reviews of this cigar.
