BACKGROUND: Suriel Cigars is a partnership between longtime friends Uriel Suriel and Emilio Rodriguez. As master blender, Suriel teamed with Hendrick Kelner Jr. of Kelner Boutique Factory (KBF) in the Dominican Republic. Together, Suriel and Kelner created the Robusto Day & Night and the Toro Majestuoso, which represent the inaugural blends for the Suriel Cigar Company.

Suriel Robusto Day & Night

The Day & Night has a Brazilian Cubra wrapper with a Dominican Cotui binder. Kelner describes the Cotui as a “family reserve tobacco” that is being grown by his sister, Monika Kelner, on her family-owned property. The cigar is rounded out with tobaccos from the Dominican Republic, Nicaragua and Peru.

By blending five different leaves from the Dominican Republic, Nicaragua and Perú, the Day & Night provides a pleasant and interesting smoke that should be perfect for smoking at any time of the day.

After being manufactured, each cigar is then aged a minimum of four months before being shipped to the retail market.

TASTING NOTES: This cigar started off sweet and creamy with a bit of spice on the palate and with a good dose of aromatic cedar on the retrohale. The draw was smooth and the burn line was even and thin. The light gray ash was flaky, which prompted me to tap off regularly.

During the first half the Suriel Night & Day Robusto was light to medium in body and strength and a solid medium in flavor. This leads me to believe that this cigar, indeed, will be appropriate for most any time of the day or night. Without a doubt, this cigar is very approachable, which means that I can recommend it to most every smoker taste preference.

FINAL THOUGHTS: During the second half, the cigar graduated to medium in body, flavor and strength. It maintained its complexity and it developed even more natural tobacco sweetness. This made it easy for me to enjoy the smoke right down to the nub.

The construction and burn remained rock solid right to the end, which made these cigars a pleasure to smoke and nub.

The Day & Night Robusto is, indeed, a cigar you can smoke any time of the day or night, but I would recommend this as an early-to-mid-day smoke, or as the first cigar in a multi-cigar smoking lineup.

As a morning smoke, this should pair well with your favorite coffee. Though I like my coffee Americano style, I think the Day & Night would also match well with a Cuban style espresso with a good dose of sugar. That combination would surely provide a lift to your spirits. And, speaking of spirits, this Robusto would also likely pair well with an aged rum. Ron Barceló, Zacapa 23 or the venerable Havana Club would all be winners, in my book.

Suriel Robusto Day & Night

Final verdict: If you like to start your day with a cigar and coffee, the Suriel Robusto Day & Night is a no-brainer choice. Don’t hesitate to contact the fine folks at Suriel to find out where you can score some of these sticks.

These cigars are kept on a middle shelf within my Aristocrat M+ cabinet humidor. They come with cellophane sleeves, which I have left intact. These sticks have been resting for a total of 2 months, 15 days. This is the first review of the Suriel Day & Night Robusto.
